You just have to love Horror

Usually, when you think of horror, you think of horror films.  My first real love, though, has always been horror fiction.  But just to get the blood flowing (get it, "blood flowing" ha ha - in a paper about horror!) here are some of my all time favorite scenes from horror movies.

The Thing -

I saw this movie one later afternoon while Mom and Dad were outside doing yard work.  It was one of the months where we had a free subscription to HBO.  So I saw this movie and these men standard at a scientific research base in the Arctic.

One scientist was clearly having a heart attack.  What happened next is so deeply imprinted on my psyche that I can never forge it.  It literally scared me so badly, I ran out of the house to help Mom and Dad with the yard work!  Needless to say, The Thing has become a staple of my Science Fiction class over the years.

The Twilight Zone -

This was another scene I watched during HBO's free subscription month (I saw Jaws too over at a neighbor's house).  I don't actually remember the passenger turning in to the monster.  I just remember hearing the driver scream and then a sickening "crunch." I always wondered what the passenger had turned in to.  Seeing the actual monster - again, which I don't recall seeing when I watched the film initially - is a let down.  I liked not knowing what it looked like and having to imagine what exactly was happening in the car to our poor driver who never should have picked up the hitchhiker.

 Silence of the Lambs -

This is a great example of the power of suggestion.  And it makes us dread Lecter before we even meet him!  And he's plenty creepy as it is!

 Alien -

The infamous chestburster scene.  You have been warned.  No one saw this coming.

 The Fly -

Simon Geller and I rented this film from US Video.  I almost had to stop watching when our protagonist begins transforming into the fly.  But this scene was just too much for me.  That's a sign of a good horror scene!

The Mist -

The infamous ending!  You've been warned.  But this is sheer brilliance.  And one of the most horrific endings I've ever seen.

 The Howling -

We watched this film on TV at my brother in law's house.  When I saw this werewolf transformation, I was terrified and had to stop watching.  It terrified me.

 Silver Bullet -

Simon Geller and I were horror film aficionados.  He rented this for his birthday and we watched it at night . . . after taking a three wheeler ride through the woods.  I was so scared for the young boy in this scene that it was like I was right there with him as the werewolf creeps up to attack.

The Blair Witch Project -

Maybe the greatest horror film of all time.  Just the suggestion of the horror that happened at Coffin Rock was enough to terrify me.

 Seven -

This is actually my personal favorite for the greatest horror film ever.  This scene was so amazing.  Every death just seems to be more and more over the top.  I had no idea what to expect for this scene and was just left horrified.  I'm still not totally over it.
